FAQ about ADHD Coaching

  • What is ADHD Coaching?

One to one support from an ADHD Coach, which helps you achieve what you want to by addressing the challenges you experience due to ADHD, and using strategies that work with your brain.

  • Does ADHD Coaching work?

Absolutely! With the right coach, and a willingness to work on your agreed focus between sessions, ADHD Coaching is a very powerful tool for learning to understand, manage and thrive with ADHD.

  • How much does ADHD Coaching cost?

Prices vary from coach to coach and organisation to organisation. If you are in employment, you can access coaching through Access to Work, which will fully fund around 12 hours of coaching. ADHD ACTS offers a sliding scale for private clients.

  • Is ADHD Coaching different from therapy / counselling?

Yes - there are significant differences between ADHD Coaching and therapy / counselling. Whilst you will talk about challenges and personal things in coaching, the focus is on solving ‘problems’ and trying out ADHD friendly strategies to do so. This can include managing emotional dysregulation but the key difference is taking action, not simply reflecting on events. If you feel like you need to make sense of a diagnosis or talk to someone about having ADHD, but don’t feel ready to make changes, therapy or counselling would be a more suitable option.

  • How do I start ADHD Coaching?

You can apply for Access to Work if you are in employment, although this will involve some months of waiting for processing and assessment. If your employer is funding coaching in the interim, or if you are funding your own coaching you can access it as soon as your chosen coach has availability. Intro calls are standard ways for you to see if you’d like to work with a particular coach.

  • How long does ADHD Coaching last / how many sessions will I need?

It depends on whether you are funding your coaching privately or through Access to Work. Access to Work usually provides around 12 sessions at one hour per session. This is a solid foundation and allows time to test out strategies and work towards lasting change. Many coaches require a minimum number of sessions as a commitment for private clients, usually 4-6, with financial incentives in place for block booking.

  • Can ADHD Coaching be done online / remotely?

Yes, and the majority of ADHD coaches facilitate coaching online. This breaks down geographical barriers, giving you greater choice in who you choose as tour coach. Online sessions also allow relevant technology to capture notes and follow up actions.

  • What areas / challenges does ADHD Coaching help with?

The list is endless, and ultimately it’s about what you want to work on and what changes you want to make.

    Some key areas are:

    Task initiation and completion
    Improving focus
    Managing distraction
Dealing with conflict in the work place
Finding organisation strategies that work for your brain

Understanding dopamine seeking and associated habits

    Rejection Sensitivity
    Stimming (and how it helps!)
    Managing the ADHD inner critic

    Navigating changes when starting medication
    Preventing ADHD burnout
    Learning how to regulate yourself

  • What credentials should an ADHD Coach have?

Technically there are no required qualifications and anyone can call themselves an ADHD Coach, which is problematic. An ADHD Coach should have training as a coach, but specifically experience and training around coaching people with ADHD, as this is a very different style of coaching to standard neurotypical approaches. ADHD Coaches should also have public liability insurance and a DBS certificates. Some people find it preferable to have an ADHD Coach who also has ADHD, and has experienced coaching themselves.

  • How do I know ADHD Coaching is working / how is progress measured?

At the beginning of a coaching journey at ADHD ACTS you would identify clear goals in specific areas of your life, which would be referred back to throughout your coaching. There are also pre-coaching and post-coaching assessment options in key areas of thriving with ADHD (some of which will be less relevant depending on your own needs.)
